Suggestive Editing Arrives: Story-Aware Rough Cuts Move Into the Mainstream

From Eddie AI's story-structured assemblies at NAB 2026 to Premiere's AI Assistant and Resolve 21 search, editing tools are proposing the cut, not only cleaning the footage.

A story-aware engine organizes visual beats into a proposed rough cut while the human editor retains approval.

For years, AI in editing meant transcription and silence removal. In 2026 the pitch moved toward a junior assistant: look at the footage, propose a structure, and cut a first pass.

What is on offer

At NAB 2026, Eddie AI's CEO Shamir Allibhai demonstrated a rough-cut feature that takes hours of source, proposes a story framework or accepts one from the editor, and assembles the cut beat by beat. The demo followed a hero's-journey structure and divided the edit into labelled chapters. Editors can also ask for string-outs, or for answers to one question across several interviews. The result exports to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro. Adobe's AI Assistant for Premiere Pro, in public beta, builds string-outs and rough assemblies from natural-language instructions. DaVinci Resolve 21 adds natural-language footage search through AI IntelliSearch. Threadline Studio's materials describe intonation and narrative analysis, and an agentic self-critique loop, aimed at interview-driven cuts.

The accuracy estimates are editorial

One editorial guide estimates transcription at about 80 to 90 percent, slate detection at about 90 percent, and rough assembly at about 60 to 70 percent. These are blog estimates, not benchmarks. The order matches how editors describe the tools. Mechanical tasks are close. Narrative assembly is usable and needs correction.

The export is the professional test

A rough-cut roundup treats a tool that cannot export XML, AAF, or EDL, opening cleanly in a standard NLE, as unworkable for professional use. The same roundup's limit on the category is a structured starting point. The editor still finishes the cut.

Reviewing a structure is a different job

The editor becomes a critic of a first draft, deciding whether the story logic holds. An assembly that looks reasonable is hard to argue with, so it helps to arrive with a point of view. Story-structure proposals are the new claim. Whether the tools can carry subtext, tone, and pacing on scripted material, rather than interviews, is unproven. Handoff quality, including markers and metadata between systems, will decide how much of this reaches a daily edit. The useful cut is the one that opens in the NLE you already finish in.
